Madaba Mosaic Maps of Jerusalem and Palestine, ca 565 A.D.
These are Mosaic maps of Jerusalem and Palestine discovered in the floor of a sixth-century church being restored in Madaba, Jordan by Kleopas Koikylides in the late 19th century. The mosaic was damaged during the restoration, and what you see is all that could be salvaged. The excellent detail in the map allowed for the accurate dating of this map. Pomponius Mela, a Cartographer from Rome, created this reconstruction of a world map. He believed there were areas of the world south of the equator that could not entered because of the desert regions between them and Europe.
